Western ghats, or Sahyadri as we all call it as, is a treasure trove of spectacular landscapes, biodiversity, flora, fauna, some amazing geological wonders and man made monuments. With the increasing pressure from human encroachment, all these elements are under stress and in turn are under depletion. Western ghats should be left untouched by human beings, to protect their future generations from getting short of resources, such as water, energy and clean air. The important elements of western ghats, which need protection are highlighted in the new version of Photo journal , Me Sahyadri Magazine. The current issue has a brief of inspiring subjects such as birds, mammals, forts, ancient caves, snakes and the ambiance.

Me Sahyadri – May 2015 - Tikona Caves

This journal introduces you to one of the ancient rock caves near Pune, through brief information and photographs. The Tikona caves described here are in Pawana Maval region of Pune.

In Pune district, in Pawana Maval region, there is a fort known as Tikona. The fort is also known as Vitandgad. The mountain is pyramid shaped and hence the fort is called as Tikona. On the top of the mountain in the fort there is a small group of rock cut caves. In the same mountain, on the back side towards Kashig village at the lower level, there is another cave. These caves at the lower level have been recently excavated and cleaned. The sri Shivdurg Samvardhan NGO from Pune have done the excavation and trail work to reach these caves with the help of local villagers. Interestingly the fort is looked after by two village youth, under the guidance of village committee and NGO. This has helped in maintenance of the fort cleanliness, and guidance to the visitors and tourists.

The cave has single complex with a veranda. The veranda has a platform at the higher level. There is a water tank on the left side. There is a groove at the angle on the wall above the water tank. This probably was made to hold the canopy over the water tank. The veranda has two pillars, one of which is narrow at the top and wider at the bottom.

These caves are facing south direction. The caves are about 13 meter feet long with about 2.3 meter height and 1.9 meter width. At about 3.5 meter from the main square entrance, there is a large natural sidewise crack in the rock. This is the main reason why the cave has been left incomplete. In monsoon the water enters the cave though this large crevice. The inside cave beyond this crack has been carved out with the flooring at higher level, probably to avoid water entering the caves during the monsoon. There are three steps while entering the caves, after the natural crevice.

There is a small room carved out on the left side with a small veranda. There is a plinth on the floor outside the room on the floor as well as ceiling. The plinth on the floor has rectangular cross-section, while on the ceiling has circular cross section. These plinths were probably meant for some carving work.

Marker stone with sculpture, Tikona Lower caves, Tikona fort, Pune district, Maharashtra, Western Ghats, India

There is a small sculpture stone similar to Gadhegal kept inside the caves. It looks like the stone was originally somewhere outside, and has been kept inside. The stone is in broken condition. Such stones were used to mark the territories/properties and were used as threatening gestures. There are also some records that a stone with similar sculpture was at the top Fort. However the stone from the top fort is missing. (2015 April).

The room carved out in the cave is very small. (About 1.9 meter wide, 1.9 meter high, 2 meter in length). The corners of the room are provided with thin ribbing. On its ceiling at the center is unfinished, indicating possible carving planned there. Section of the cave is nicely finished while reaming section is not. There are no symbols or marking anywhere in the cave. However the entrance plinth (Umbaratha) of the small room inside the cave has rough outlined shape. This shape may give idea about the originators of the cave. There is a hole made in the rock on the right bottom of the room to remove the monsoon rain water getting accumulated inside the room. The drain hole is not aesthetically made. The rock cutting of the inner most section of the cave is left incomplete.

There are caves at the top of the fort. These caves are facing north. There is a small carved cubicle. This cubicle is 2.2 meter wide, 2.1 meter in height and 2.1 meter in depth. There is a deity Goddess Taljaai in this cubicle. The cubicle ceiling has beautiful rock cut flower like carving. Outside the cubicle there is one more small carving of flower on the ceiling. The interesting aspect of almost similar size of cubicle at the top cave and lower cave indicates both the upper and lower caves to have some connection between them. The lower cave also has the provision of carving symbol on the ceiling similar to that seen at the top cave. The caves are supposed to be originally made in 7th-8th century AD.
